Be that as it may, Indonesia has strayed numerous challenges, for example, used to heavily influenced by the Dutch and Japanese and war with the Dutch. On 17 August 1945, the autonomy of Indonesia was announced by Sukarno, however the Dutch dismissed the presentation of freedom, at that point the Dutch reoccupied Indonesia in 1946. Be that as it may, the administration of Indonesia rewarded to the reoccupation of the Dutch since youngsters of Indonesia got an amazing military preparing during the Japanese occupation. At that point on August 5 1967, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines accumulated in Bangkok and marked on the Bangkok Declaration to pronounce the foundation of ASEAN. The accomplishment of ASEAN seared a contract with a solid establishment for foundation of an ASEAN people group and invigorate ASEANs job in managing assortment of compositional changes in the worldwide participation. In the changing engineering of worldwide collaboration and contradiction is the job and bartering the force which can be found in Indonesia that put into term that must be commonly concurred. The possibility that foundation of the ASESAN people group, Indonesia will sting because of absence of bartering intensity of monetary and political. Moreover, Indonesia is battling with numerous significant components, for example, implementation of political participation and security and democratization and regard for human rights which were given by the ASEAN sanction. To clarify the haggling intensity of Indonesia in ASEAN, it was viewed as the start of exchange. The war was highly convoluted which make us barely to accept that Indonesia consent to frame a territorial gathering with Malaysia. In any case, later on, under Indonesia President Suharto, Indonesia in the end consent to acknowledge the Malaysia. What's more, Indonesia consented to shape ASEAN in implying that Indonesia consented to acknowledge the foundation of Federation Malaysia and in addition; the pressure among Indonesia and Malaysia war was not occurred any longer in 1966. All the more critically, the time of the virus war, ASEAN can break out effectively claiming to belief system crash. Around then, Indonesia had a urgent job to diminish this accident. Indonesia had taken an interest with other ASEAN part nations so as to forestall the pestilence of socialist and reinforce the ASEANs job become more grounded. A.1. After arrange commonly, the conflict despite everything happened and the circumstance still more regrettable. Reacting to this issues Indonesia had look for an understanding which Indonesia sent onlookers to strife zone so as to forestall fire. The issue was never understood until Cambodia approached UN for help. It demonstrated that Indonesia neglected to tackle the issue. Indeed, it is correct Indonesia neglected to tackle the issue, however it isn't Indonesias botches; It is a result of the universal law must regard to the state power and ASEAN also. ASEAN is territorial gathering and it havent enough force yet to intercede in its individuals struggle. Notwithstanding the disappointment of tackling the issue, the present of Indonesia in this debate is extremely significant in light of the fact that until the contest end it spared numerous life that live along the border. This disappointment experience will impact emphatically on our future ASEAN. Cooperation of Indonesia in the splendid eventual fate of ASEAN Indonesia can be call an elder sibling of ASEAN in view of it populace, size of an area and furthermore situated in one of the busiest exchange course the world called Malacca. Importance of Recycling at the University Essay example -- Environment

Significance of Recycling at the University I recollect my first semester here at the University and the dull lobbies of the Bates House Residence Hall. Numerous a gathering was closed with a thought for how to manage the unlimited heaps of jars that had congregated on the floor. One thought, I recollect, was to divider somebody into his room and another was to perceive what number of we could remain on end without toppling. Yet, we generally simply wound up tossing them in the trashcans in our reject room. Once in a while out of the five trashcans in the room put in a safe spot for junk removal, three or four would be totally loaded up with many jars of different drinks. Upon further examination, I can likewise recollect the little, blue pail that was tossed randomly on my bed that first day. Despite the fact that it was very certain that this bushel was to reuse, as a result of the triple bolt image that was so conspicuously positioned on the front, I saw it as an incredible junk can, since I had neglected to bring one. Thro ughout that semester it is difficult to state exactly what number of jars I tossed out or saw unintentionally thronw around the parking area like a million sparkling coins toward the evening daylight. In any case, one thing I can say is that with the best possible techniques the University could rouse understudies like me to assist keep with cleaning nature just as bring in the cash back that is expected to keep the venture fruitful. The University ought to reexamine the techniques by which its present reusing system can be improved. With the best possible upgrades the University can build understudy mindfulness about the issues with contamination, increment the measure of salary that is repaid through the framework, and keep its effect on the general condition... ... known and effectively open, for example, in the investigation territories of every corridor, the thought will speak to a lot a larger number of individuals than if the receptacles are just positioned on the ground level. Despite the fact that a few people may not contribute without a doubt or by any means, the quantity of understudies who hop on the plan to host a free gathering or other compensating prize will make the quantity of nonconformists old. This is my arrangement for the proceeded and, eventually, future accomplishment of the reusing program here at USC. As a first year recruit, I bounce on each chance to get something free that I run over, and in the event that it were as simple as tossing the can down my corridor instead of on my floor I would be in support of it. Who can deny that my individual rookies don't feel the equivalent? The long queues at the various tables before Russell House fill in for instance that when offered a free carrot, a brilliant rabbit can't decrease.

Managing Operational Risk In Financial Institution Finance Essay - Free Essay Example

Q1. Explain the internal control failures that allowed this fraud to occur and recommend what steps you would take to improve the risk framework at Caforilus to prevent similar loss events occurring? The fraud that occurred at caforilus was not due to one single factor but there were multiple factors which encouraged the fraud to occur. All three lines of defence failed to overcome the fraud the first line of defence, the business line failed to establish and maintain stronger risk controls, risk culture, risk appetite, on day to day responsibilities of business line second line of defence the oversight, which failed to monitor the risk guidance in the firm this involve compliance, legal and finance, IT security, HR functions and risk management functions, the third line of defence is the risk assurance where the internal Audit committee failed to provide independent assurance. All three levels reports through to the board and are all responsible to it, so the fourth line of defence in a sense is the board but in caforilus it is the Board the Director of marketing and sales was corrupt and made a fraud so knowingly or unknowingly all three lines of defence failed to report the fraud. Firstly we will look at the Cause, Event and Effect. The Cause to the fraud was poor process, system, people, Technology. Event was internal fraud and Effect was scam of  £8 million, Jail to the sales and marketing Director, loss of reputation, effect on staff moral, possible fine by FSA, loss of shareholder wealth. There were plenty of indicators to the fraud at caforilus but everyone turned a blind eye. There were plenty of internal control failures which allowed the fraud to occur. People:- The internal fraud was created by the director of the sales and marketing mark Hughes, who created a miscellaneous account and solely authorised all the transactions. Helen Northcroft realised the fraud but due to the lack of training or knowledge wasnt sure of what action to take or who she should report to. HR department as the report doesnt say if there were any checks made on Mark Hughes before employing. Chief Internal Auditor Keith Garret, didnt took any action and just ignored to Helens suspicions. Kelly Feingold who worked in operational risk department wasnt sure about what action to take and thought Steve (Operational Risk Director) is a good friend of Mark so wouldnt take action so she did not reported but got James Bellamy from the fraud Department to look into. Finally James Bellamy got control of the situation and exposed Marks fraud. Process:- There were no internal audit checks carried out, even if there was audit then the audit team failed to pick up the fraud which was occurring. There was no oversight of invoices, all invoices were approved by the director of the sales and marketing, and were not back checked by the finance department. Top management had concentration of power, so for decision making no other department managers were consulted. Few invoice were raised for same amount under different company names for same date but yet not been noticed by the finance department. Daily transaction reports were not been produced in organisation, so no past records could be checked. Authorisation of payment was only by one person i.e. the marketing and sales director. Technology Caforilus did not had proper technology to prevent fraud, eg. Same amounts, same date, same services, invoices were paid, if caforilus had proper technology then the fraud would have detected at the very first. Environment Poor risk control culture as no one, apart from Helen or James took initiative to investigate the fraud. The culture was developed that everyone turned on blind eye, it could be said that directly or indirectly many other people were involved but all turned on blind eye to marks seniority. A culture was developed that director was a problem solver, a good guy, giving out freebies, get things done, so no one was ready to believe that such a person could create fraud. Staff member felt pressure and felt threatened to be fired if challenged somebody. There are plenty of loopholes into the system of caforilus which led fraud to occur, some recommendation that could be given to prevent the fraud to occur in future are. Training and Development:- It is very important in a firm that relevant training is given to each member to do their work efficiently. In caforilus we could say company lacked of training and development as the head of marketing and sales wasnt sure of who to report to about the fraud, when she came to know about the fraud she would have taken the step and could have had directly contacted the external company to check the invoice and the fraud could have had caught so more training is required to senior managers to detect fraud and how to solve it. Head of finance department to check the accounts at least once a month so if any fraud occurring could be noticed immediately. No authorisation/signage of cheque by one person two signatures required on any payment and that too both authorised person need to be from different department. So in case of caforius one sign from director of sales marketing then other sign from the head of finance department. Regular Internal Audit to be taken. Audit staff to take independent audit and not to make any judgements on person nature. Audit committee to be independent and any relationships that unduly influence the professional judgement should be avoided. Create a climate of discipline and control which would help to reduce the opportunity of fraud. Oversight of any payment no matter even if authorised by director. Stronger corporate governance structure. No one person decision but should be group involvement. Director to conduct meeting with the head of the department before any contracts been given out, and to update to staff of any decisions taken solely, Director to report to NED. Q2. Discuss why financial institutions are vulnerable to people risks and recommend how Caforilus could reduce its exposure to these risks? Managing people risk plays a very important role in any company. (Blunden T, and Thirwell J, 2010) says, Most operational risks are ultimately the result of people failure whether at strategic, managerial, or operational level. Financial institutions specifically are very vulnerable to people risk we could see this form the events that have occurred in past and which have led many financial institution to collapse for eg. Incident at Barings due to one person Nick Leeson a rouge trader who concealed unauthorised trading activities and made a fraud of $1 billion and led Barings to Bankrupt. (www.erisk.com) Similar fraud have occurred with Daiwa Bank, Natwest, Allied Irish Banks, which have faced huge losses due to people, so for any event and losses or failure ultimately people are going to be the cause unless its any natural cause of god, (Martin. P, 2009) says, there are two causes to operational risk event, one is an act of God and other is the people. People design and maintain processes and system and cause operational risk events by either doing something they should not be doing or not doing something they should be doing. T. Blunden, (2010) says People are essentially honest they do not come to work to defraud or to cause disruption. It is often true but the system which has some loopholes or process that are ineffective, motivate people to do fraud, or even due to lack of training, competence, experience, stress, bereavement, unemployment, health problems etc, many lead to errors and losses. So to overcome from these people risks there are some key controls such as, Training and development, Appraisal and rewards, effective management, openness and transparency, selection, rewards, staff retention, system update, etc, are some controls which could help and reduced people risks. In Caforlius the loss of  £8 million was encountered of people risk. There was one person who created the fraud but there was involvement of many other, who either turned a blind eye or just didnt bother to challenge the director for his fraud. Some recommendations could be given to reduce such a risk in future. There was no culture of openness and transparency in Cafarilus, many knew about the fraud but didnt report due to Marks seniority. So a culture needs to be developed to challenge the fraud and report it either a system to be developed where losses/events could be reported anonymously. Need of effective management structure, an effective system where communication could run freely from up and down, clearity of the roles and responsibilities to individually. Getting friendly with the staff, knowing them, rewarding them, are good sign of motivation but when it obstructs individual from taking professional duties then it could be a risk for the company, so from Caforilus the chief internal auditor director, operation manager, missed to take their professional duties and so such a pattern of bribe should be avoided. Financial companies are vulnerable to risk so training and development plays a key role to avoid risks. In Caforilus we see lack of training and development, head of department to be made aware of what fraud could occur and what action to take to overcome them. Staff appraisal to be conducted quarterly, which would help to know the employees better, openly taking suggestions from the staff, help to know what training could be required to developed and perform the duty better. Q3. Explain the importance of risk culture, critically analyse the risk culture at Caforilus and recommend how this could be improved? Risk culture plays a very important role in any organisation. A favourable culture is essential for the effective management of operational risk. The institute of operational risk, (2010) says a firms organisational culture it values and valued behaviours will under pin the risk culture, the openness, trust, honesty and integrity from a strong risk culture of an organisation. The openness and transparency encourage people to risk reporting, encourage challenging debate at all levels, increases the risk awareness helps to understand the duties motivates people to better do their job. But this culture must come from CEO, senior manager who must motivate and form a relevant culture in organisation, it could be said that culture is strongly influenced by its leadership. Developing and maintaining the right risk culture is highly influential in the effectiveness of the risk management. A favourable culture is essential for the effective management of operational risk. The favourable cul ture develops. High degree of personal responsibility and empowerment to take appropriate risk. It motivates employees to better do their jobs and enhances the organisation performance. It helps to built up staff morale. It develops high level of staff integrity. It develops positive environment where no staff are intimidated on their mistakes. It makes a continuous improvement of organisation where people take challenge and responsibility for being more effective and efficient. It makes aware about the risk. It brings stronger communication throughout the organisation. It brings expertise into organisation. However for a culture to be effective it is important a strong risk culture is embodied by the Boards and senior managers. In caforilus we see a poor culture through the organisation. There was loss of staff morale, weak communication between the departments; duties were not fulfilled by Audit committee or the operational risk department, finance de partment not overseeing the pay outs. Which all lead to a scam of  £8million so its very important that the Boards and senior managers play a positive role and develop a strong risk culture. Some recommendations that could be given are: Making people aware about the risk, educating them about the risk and risk controls. Making people understand about the importance of their duties and how it relates to risk if not fulfilled. Developing stronger controls throughout the organisation and letting people know of what is expected of them. Creating openness and transparency to the organisation which will develops a stronger culture. Provide better understanding of the organisation risk appetite. Segregation of duties and periodically rotation of senior staff so that would give a better understanding throughout the organisational functions to seniors, and even as in case of caforilus it would avoid developing internal contacts for personal benefits. So could be conclu ded that the risk culture at cafotilus wasnt strong so it increased the vulnevability of organisation.

Tis Time - Literature Essay Samples

Leon. No foot shall stir.Paul. Music, awake her; strike! [Music]Tis time; descend; be stone no more; approach;Strike all that look upon with marvel. Come!Ill fill your grave up: stir, nay, come away:Bequeath to death your numbness; for from himDear life redeems you. You perceive she stirs:The Winters Tale (V.iii.98-103)Unlike most of Shakespeares earlier plays, The Winters Tale moves from tragedy to comedy. The disastrous consequences of Leontes jealousy and tyranny are resolved by the passing of time. Only after sixteen years can the two royal families come together again. Time also plays a significant role in the reading of the chosen passage. The passage is full of commas, colons, semi-colons, and periods, which force the lines to be slowed and pausing. The frequent punctuations draw the readers attention to time and its effects on the words being spoken by the characters. The scansion of the passage illustrates Shakespeares mastery of time as he manipulates the rhythm of the lines using varying foots and meters. Time seems to be the crucial element in not only the scansion of this passage, but in the development of the play as a whole. Line ninety-eight begins with a half-line consisting of only two feet, No foot shall stir. The brevity of the line and the slowness of the opening spondee help to create the tension before Paulina attempts to summon the statue of Hermione. Leontes wants everyone to stand still while Paulina tries to give life to the statue. He says, No foot shall stir (98). Meanwhile, the metrical feet in line ninety-eight do stir as the pentameter is broken up into two half-lines. This contradiction of what Leontes wants and how the feet in the lines are set up conveys the lack of Leontes total authority. In many instances of the play, Leontes requests are not heeded to, despite his position as king. When Leontes wants Camillo to poison Hermione, Camillo does not do as he says. Instead, he runs off with Polixenes, buying pr ecious time for everyone. Camillo and Polixenes evade death, and Hermione is given enough time to stage a death so that she can avoid being killed also. Camillos noble defiance gives everyone valuable time; the key factor which allows people to take shelter from Leontes tyranny. The second half-line of line ninety-eight consists of a trochee and two iambs: Music, awake her; strike! Since the only varying foot of the latter half-line is the trochee, music, Shakespeare seems to be emphasizing the significance of music. In a sense, music is a representation of time because it is defined by its time signatures, which designate much of its rhythmical patterns. Music is also the magical element that accompanies the transformation of the still Hermione into the living Hermione, which makes it an agent of change. In other words, Shakespeare conveys that music, or time, has the power to change. Paulina calls for the music to awake her (98), and it does. Time is the essential element t hat frees Hermione from the bondage of her hiding. In line ninety-nine, Paulina is summoning Hermione from the statue. She indicates that it is time for Hermione to reveal herself. The line begins with the two iambs, Tis time; descend;. Because the iamb is the most basic and common Shakespearean foot, the two iambs that begin the line seem to indicate appropriateness. The appropriate time for Hermiones re-emergence has finally come. In the next two spondaic feet, Paulina utters, be stone no more; (99). The two rigid spondees seem to not only reflect the stiffness of the statue, but also the inflexibility of time. No one has the power to undo what has happened and bring back the years lost during her hiding. Sixteen years must pass by in order for Hermione to be united with her family. The spondee at the beginning of line one hundred, Strike all, provides a powerful shift in Paulinas beckoning of Hermione. Incidentally, the word strike is also a term associated with clocks, which were common by the 1500s (Gomez). When speaking in terms of time according to clocks, strike is a commonly used term that marks the passing of an hour, or the beginning of one. Paulina first uses the word strike in line ninety-eight to mark the beginning of the music, which as mentioned before, is a symbol of time. It seems that Shakespeare uses the word strike in reference to time, more specifically, to the marking of time passed. In line one hundred, Paulina urges Hermione to show that she is alive, and in a way, it seems that she really wants Hermione to reveal to everyone what Time can do. Although Hermione has aged, Time keeps her safe and living for many years. Time also allows Perdita to grow and return to Hermione and in the end, it is responsible for bringing the entire family back together. In the entire last scene of the play, Leontes is overcome by feelings of genuine grief after seeing the statue of Hermione. He comments on the statues realistic app earance, then wonders why the statue appears wrinkled and aged. Polixenes argues that the statue of Hermione does not seem so aged. Leontes then mentions the majestic appearance of the statue by saying, Even with such life of majesty (V. iii. 35) and Theres magic in thy majesty (V. iii. 39). Because Hermione understands the power of time and is able to endure those years in hiding, Time seems to favor her and allows her to age gracefully. Paulina responds by saying, So much the more our carvers excellence, / Which lets go by some sixteen years and makes her / as she livd now (V. iii. 30-1). In reality, there is no actual stone carver, but only Time, which has been gracious to Hermiones appearance over the years. Understanding the effects of time and having a good sense of it seems to be essential to the play. Hermione is perhaps the most perceptive of Time. When Leontes begins to make fierce accusations about her infidelity, she says, I must be patient till the heavens look / With an aspect more favourable (II. I. 106-7). She realizes that she is powerless against Leontes jealous rage and resorts to the powers of Time to work against Leontes tyranny. Although she has to wait many years, she is successful in making Leontes realize his mistakes and avoids imprisonment and even death.Camillo is also quite perceptive of Time. When he is told by Leontes to poison Polixenes, Camillo informs Polixenes and finds the right time for the two of them to escape safely to Bohemia. Also, after some years in Bohemia, Camillo notices that he has not seen Prince Florizel for three days (IV. ii. 30). His keen perception of time leads both him and Polixenes to realize the increasing absence of Florizel, which results in their discovery of the love between Florizel and Perdita. This discovery enables Camillo to help the young couple by sending them to Bohemia, which is the beginning of the plays reunion. Unlike Hermione and Camillo, Leontes has a poor sense of time. At the beginning of the play, when Polixenes decides to go back and tend to his royal duties in Bohemia, Leontes urges him to stay another week. At the request of Leontes, Hermione successfully persuades him into staying, even though it has been nine months since he left his duties. Polixenes extended stay, which Leontes wants, ends in disaster. As a result, Leontes family is broken up and he loses a dear a friend. When Cleomenes and Dion return astonishingly quickly with the oracle, Leontes takes it as a sign that the oracle will support his suspicions of Hermione and Polixenes. However, Leontes interprets the briefness of their trip inaccurately. When the oracle is read, it proves Hermione and Polixenes innocence. Leontes dull understanding of time leaves him blind to the truth. The image of the oracle appears to be yet another symbol of time. The oracle that Leontes requests, reveals the truth and predicts the future. Although Leontes promises to abide by the oracle, whic h is in a way, a symbol of time because it is able to jump ahead in time and foresee what is to come, he refuses to follow it after finding that it disproves his doubts about his wife and Polixenes. His stubbornness towards the oracle, and towards the fate of Time, ends in the tragedy that lasts for sixteen long years.Even Paulina, who appears to have a good sense of time because of her role in Hermiones lengthy hiding, lacks good timing when she approaches Leontes with his newborn. In an attempt to appease Leontes fury, Paulina brings the baby to him, despite being warned that the king is lacking sleep and should not be approached. Paulina insists that the truth shall release him from his misunderstandings, while in fact, only time is able to do so. When Paulina brings the baby to Leontes in his agitated state, he flies into a rage and eventually orders Antigonus to abandon the baby in a far off place. Although Antigonus is noble enough to offer his own life for the babys, he has a poor grasp of time, which kills him. When he finally reaches the deserts of Bohemia, the mariner foresees a storm and Antigonus promises to return quickly. Instead of hurrying like he promises, Antigonus begins telling the baby about his dream of the ghostly figure of Hermione. Antigonus fails to hurry and takes too much time. Consequently, he is brutally attacked and killed by a bear. Antigonus delay not only kills him, but the entire crew of his ship. The storm develops rapidly while he is away and shipwrecks all on board. Antigonus underestimation of Time, ends in tragedy. In Act IV, Shakespeare uses a Chorus symbolizing Time to indicate the passing of sixteen years. In this scene, Time speaks of its powers and abilities. Time begins by saying, I that please some, try all (1). Indeed, no one is impervious to Time; it affects everyone in the play. Even though Time makes it possible for Hermione to reunite with her family at the end, she loses sixteen years of her l ife in hiding. Time also tries Leontes. At the beginning of the play, he almost has no understanding of Time, yet, with the help of Paulina, Leontes successfully endures the long years by mourning for his wife and not remarrying. Leontes willingness to wait in mourning enables him to pass Times trial, which he is rewarded for at the end of the play. Time proceeds to illustrate its omnipotence by saying it does not adhere to the rules of law or custom, that it can completely overturn what is to be expected. Time says, since it is in my power / To oerthrow law, and in one self-born hour / To plant and oerwhelm custom (7-9). In addition to being omnipotent, Time also claims to be omnipresent. The same I am, ere ancientst order was, / Or what is now receivd (10-12). It is clear that Shakespeare makes Time the most powerful force in the play. Time clearly plays the largest role in the story. It is by no accident that Shakespeare titles the play The Winters Tale, since winter is a time of the year. Furthermore, winter is the coldest and bleakest season of the year. Subsequently, the play begins in tragedy, and it seems as though there is no hope for Leontes to regain what he has destroyed. Only Time is able to convert this tragedy into comedy; the sixteen years that pass brings back nearly all that is destroyed by Leontes. Time is able to miraculously heal the wounds of the two royal families, but it cannot undo their mistakes. Unfortunately, the lost time cannot be regained. Through The Winters Tale, Shakespeare conveys the significance of time and the importance of ones understanding of time. If used wisely like Hermione and Camillo, time can spare ones life and shelter an individual from imminent danger. When time is misused or misjudged, as seen in Leontes hasty accusations and also in Antigonus tardiness in returning to the ship, Time can lead to utter destruction. Works CitedGomez, Michelle.
